![]() Nash does extensive research and talks directly to dozens of the people who knew Elvis best, and the former two books in particular really provide a solid portrait of what Elvis was like as a person, how he thought, and how he viewed the world and himself. I consider the three books by Alanna Nash ( Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, Baby Let's Play House, and The Colonel as the best books about Elvis. His books are not bad, but I wouldn't rank them as the authoritative biographies of Elvis. Guralnick also subscribes a bit too much to the notion that Elvis peaked as an artist in the 50's. In the last ten years of Elvis' life the Colonel was arguably one of the worst personal managers in entertainment history, and Guralnick is not nearly as critical of him as he should be. He also is something of an apologist for the Colonel. Guralnick relies a lot on secondary sources rather than original research. I think the Guralnick books are somewhat overrated. ![]()
